Make mistakes, but learn from it!
Who dares to embrace genuine mistakes? I bet that no one really does! And yet we must do so to be successful in this disruptive time. We are being caught on all sides by the speed of developments around us. Our biggest challenge is to connect with our existing organization to this rapid change. And actually, we do not succeed very well.
The biggest challenge is to release control as a superior. Certainly, as pressure increases, we all fall back in the assertion of control of all processes. After all, what security do you have if you keep everything under control? Is your chosen road always the best? We make ourselves aware that if you make a mistake you better do it yourself.
Continuous improvement and renewal is the only way to create and maintain distinctiveness. That means there are many changes continuously. And so we will make mistakes. By making mistakes we can learn and grow.
Making mistakes is, therefore, a security in the way we walk. The best part is to have fun. Especially because we need the mistakes to learn, to develop.
And so we will have to change as an entrepreneur. Away from the fixed mindset. "I've done it wrong, so I can not do this and I'm not going to get better." Out of the belief that your capacities are more or less fixed. We need a growth mindset. Without risk no growth. Learning from mistakes. Cruijff's second law: "every disadvantage has a benefit".
Mistakes are relative. What you see as a mistake can be seen by others as a beautiful challenging step.
Learning to make mistakes in teams is another step further. Learning teams are increasingly important in changes and developments of organizations. Learning as a team is about developing new knowledge and learning from previous situations. It is a form of workplace learning without knowing immediately what the return is. For example, how do you learn as a team to "adapt to the new situation" and how do you measure whether team competencies have been developed?
So, as a starting point, we must provide a safe environment to our employees. An environment in which mistakes can be made without sanctioning. Mistakes like fuel to learn. Maybe even create an environment that rewards making mistakes, because we do not learn otherwise.
The choice is ours: be an entrepreneur and a leader in a different world!
